Deck the Halls without the Holiday Hazards: Beat Seasonal Weight Gain and Stress

Traditional holiday songs inform us, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” and “Tis the season to be jolly.” Yet somehow the jubilance conveyed in these musical messages eludes us. Ideally, the holiday season is time of joy, peace, and celebration. In reality, it ushers in a wide variety of thoughts and feelings, often bringing the unwanted gifts of excess stress, bouts of the blues, and added inches to the waistline. In this workshop, we learn to graciously decline these unwanted gifts and fully embrace the joy and peace of the season.

Peace of Mind and Clarity of Consciousness:

A Psycho-Spiritual Perspective on Transforming
Anxiety and Depression

Co-Facilitator, Jerry Gore, MD

Jerry P. Gore, MD

Dr. Gore obtained his MD from the University of Illinois Medical School, his post-graduate degree at Northwestern University, and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He practices general medicine and psychiatry at the Center for Holistic Medicine using a wide variety of holistic methods. For 27 years he has pioneered an approach for treating the body, mind, and spirit of the person using techniques such as diet, supplements, herbs, remedies and psychotherapy. His experience includes teaching, writing, lecturing, and media appearances.

Course Description

Symptoms of depression and anxiety run rampant in the U.S. adult population: fatigue, irritability, aches and pains, muscle tension, overeating, difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating, constant rushing and lack of enjoyment in life. Amidst the responsibilities and demands of daily life we have become human doings rather than human beings. Striving to produce, progress and improve, we lose touch with our truest selves, feel distanced from our passionate spirits and become detached from our sense of meaning and purpose in life.

This seminar weaves Eastern philosophy, Western medicine, psychological theory and spiritual insights into a comprehensive system for transforming the experience of depression and anxiety. Western medicine seeks to eliminate symptoms. Holistic medicine seeks to heal the underlying causes of symptoms. From the holistic perspective, physical and mental health result from an inner harmony among systems and the integrated, congruent functioning of the body, mind, emotions, spirit, and environment. To heal, we must reconnect with all dimensions of our being and reclaim our wholeness. From the psycho-spiritual perspective, the experience of depression and anxiety present an invitation for increased awareness, deeper integration, and healing opportunities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the holistic wellness paradigm.

  2. Compare traditional and holistic viewpoints on underlying causes of anxiety and depression.

  3. Implement six modalities to down-regulate the sympathetic nervous system.

  4. Develop a conceptual model of the transpersonal body-mind.

  5. Explain five natural ways to calm and balance disrupted brain biochemistry.

  6. Practice four mindfulness strategies that minimize anxiety and facilitate entering personal sacred space.

  7. Identify the model of transformational living to reduce anxiety and depression.

  8. Consciously embark on the journey of transformational living to heal yourself, your life and our world
